officers. wmur's mike cronin joins us live from the attorney general's office in concord with the latest on the investigation. >> this could be a lengthy investigation by the attorney general's office as they figure out the circumstances surrounding the shooting. people woke to a frightening situation this morning in a claremont neighborhood. little before 5:00 a.m., i heard 3 gunshots. >> the attorney general's office says a 911 call on congress says a 911 call on congress street became a confrontation 25-year-old cody lafont was killed, but it's unclear what led to the deadly situation. none of the officers were hurt. >> it made me nervous. i didn't dare turn on any lights. i didn't know if there someone around the neighborhood, running. it was very nerve-racking. >> i'm really surprised. we have lived in this neighborhood since 1985 and i

>> investigators took pictures and collected evidence throughout the day. they're not saying whether any video was recorded from a dash cam or body camera. >> we provide a detailed written report that sets forth all of the information gathered as well as our legal conclusions as to what, if any, criminal matter should be brought. this case is no different than any of the cases that we deal with. >> the ag's office says this w the investigation is complete. neighbors who news 9 spoke to don't know lafont, but say the incident is very unusual for the area. >> i am really kind of sad to see that this has happened, but i think it just goes along with the crazy world we live in today. >> i just feel sad about what happened, feel sad for the police officer. >> an autopsy tomorrow will determine the cause and manner of death. authorities are also

they say when the officer responded to a 911 call, he was confronted by a hysterical woman with a knife. they say the officer backed away, but the woman followed him and ignored orders to drop the knife. that's when police say the officer shot her. the woman is recovering at a hospital. she's now facing charges for a man wanted for using a stolen credit card. authorities say this man seen here used a stolen credit card to buy 4 gift cards from the wal-mart in hudson. the incident happened august 21. anyone with information is asked to call hudson police, or their tip line. a salem man found guilty of filming women with a hidden camera will be sentenced tomorrow. 55-year-old joseph hennessey was convicted of four counts of

police say hennessey placed a camera in a flower pot inside the women's bathroom at kickstand cafe in arlington, mass back in 2014. state police are investigating what caused a car crash that lefthe vehicle crashed upright into trees. the car veered off of i-89 north in concord just after 3 this afternoon. concord fire and rescue cut down trees to get to the car door and get the 53-year-old massachusetts man out. he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. tonight, a manchester family is displaced because of an apartment fire. firefighters say a space heater sparked the fire around 3:50 this morning. it took crews about a half hour to put out the flames on somerville street. nobody was injured in the fire. the red cross is helping the family find a place to stay tonight. temperatures dropping across the state tonight. many areas will have a hard frost tonight. meteorologist hayley lapoint tells us how cool it'll get.

and you can watch the first presidential debate here on wmur tomorrow night. cherise: hillary clinton and donald trump will go head to head at hofstra university in new york. coverage begins at 9:00. donald trump's running mate will be in the granite state tomorrow. republican vice presidential candidate mike pence will hold a rally at milford's town auditorium on monday. it starts at 1:30. this is pence's second visit to the state since becoming trump's running mate. clinton will be in new hampshire on wednesd university of new hampshire field house with senator bernie sanders. the event is being billed as a discussion about college affordability. this will be her first visit to the state since the democratic national convention. it was a great afternoon for nascar race fans at the new hampshire motor speedway.

into the stands to watch the bad boy off road 300 race today. many of them stayed several nights in campers. whether they're die hard race fans or new to nascar, people had a great time watching their favorite drivers compete in the chase at the magic mile. >> it's a great day come you can see everything, it's a great experience. >> these guys have told me, but i never went before. never went before, never watched a nascar race in my life. first time i'm gonna be watching one, it's incredible. i'm hooked. i already told them i'm coming back next year. with or without them, i'm going to be here next year. cherise: fans are already looking forward to returning to loudon next summer for more nascar excitement. we'll have highlights from today's race coming up in sports. a very stinky attraction drew more than 2,000 people to the dartmouth college campus this weekend. morphy the corpse flower bloomed on friday and began emitting a terrible stench. dartmouth greenhouse managers compare the foul odor to something between dirty diapers and rotting fish. that stink was at its peak on friday night into saturday morning and was not quite as bad today as people took pictures and snapped selfies with the

to create good jobs, and keep our young families here. cherise: police on the scene of a car crash. that road is closed. he's asking drivers to avoid the area and don't know when it will reopen. a sunday morning shooting at a las vegas starbucks left one man dead. las vegas police say two men got into an argument when one pulled out a gun and opened fire. there were between 12 and 14 people inside the coffee shop when the violence erupted.

the man accused of opening fire in a washington mall and killing five people will face a judge tomorrow. arcan cetin was taken into custody yesterday after a manhunt. today, investigators searched his apartment and car. they removed boxes from the apartment, but detectives have not said what they found. authorities are still trying to find out what the motive of the shooting was. tonight, the mayor has lifted cu man by police. there have been protests every day and night since 43-year-old keith lamont scott was shot to death on tuesday. a midnight to 6:00 a.m. curfew went into effect thursday after protests became violent. protests today at the carolina panther's football game were peaceful. >> it does not make sense to us how it was possible that this incident resulted in the loss of

scott was just sitting in his suv waiting to pick up his son from school. officers say they were in the neighborhood on an unrelated arrest warrant, but when they saw scott with marijuana and a gun, they decided to approach him. golf legend arnold palmer died today at the age of 87. the ceo of arnold palmer enterprises confirms he died this afternoon of complications from heart problems. palmer won nearly 90 golf tournaments. he was also the first golfer to earn a million dollars while putting on the greens. beyond golf, palmer was a pioneer in sports marketing. tonight, baseball fans are mourning the loss of miami marlins pitcher jose fernandez. fernandez was killed in a boating crash in miami early this morning. authorities say he was boating with two friends when they hit a jetty at full speed, killing everyone on board. the marlins game against atlanta today was canceled. fernandez was a two-time all star and the national league rookie of the year in 2013.

my heart goes out to his family. cherise: florida fish and wildlife say there was no immediate indication that alcohol or drugs were involved. none of the victims were wearing life jackets. people in cedar rapids iowa are preparing for flooding tonight as forecasters say water levels will rise and hit their peak tuesday. those in the most danger are leaving low-lying areas at the request of authorities as the cedar river continues to rise. hayley: we can use a little bit of the regular instead, we see another beautiful weekend.

when i first found out that carl had been using heroin on and off for a year. i immediately thought not my son. i found him in his bathroom with a syringe still in his hand and that was the worst day of my life. annie kuster is leading the fight regarding this opioid epidemic. she's trying to do everything she can to get laws changed. so this doesn't happen again. she's definitely a leader. i just love annie.

mcdowell would end up wi a cut tire, left rear. he spun around and the caution came out. as usual, some more late cautions but none that involved chase drivers. 10 laps to go. stenhouse sent spinning, but no cars made contact. the leader kenseth stayed on the track through the final cautions. they did not go to pit road for new tires. 6 laps to go and on fresher tires, kevin harvick passes kenseth for the lead. he hangs on from there. harvick claims his 3rd win of the year and his 2nd overall at nhms, adding to his magic mile victory in 2006. harvick is guarunteed to advance to the 2nd round of the chase along with last weeks winner, martin truex jr.

fast car. was trying hard to get that win. >> and frustrated because i felt he could have been better but for a minute, it looked really bad. i thought we were getting caught up in a wreck. happy with the result. we have got to find a little more speed for the next round. of the season and some momentum coming to new england. both the eagles and steelers were 2-0 coming in to the battle of pennsylvania. carson wentz continues to impress for philly. he goes to darren spoles here and the play goes for a 73-yard touchdown.
